DTAC sees potential in picture uploading

SRISAMORN PHOOSUPHANUSORN

DTAC, the country's second-largest mobile operator, is forging ahead with its third-generation (3G) mobile broadband efforts by introducing real-time photo-sharing from mobile phones to websites.

The service, called ''Playground'', was developed by Crie Co, the application arm of DTAC. It allows both prepaid and postpaid of mobile users from AIS, DTAC and True Move to upload pictures with locations from mobile phones to the Playground website www.pg.in.th, or Hi5, MySpace, Multiply and Facebook.

DTAC customers will be charged one baht a minute for the GPRS tariff and two baht for a picture upload.

Pakorn Pannachet, head for value-added services of DTAC, said the application was part of the first stage of the company's 3G business plan.

He said the service was intended to create an integrated online community, particularly for young, technology-aware users in the local mobile market. The company is also looking to expand the service in other Asian countries where its Norwegian parent Telenor does business.

He said the company expected to attract up to 300,000 users within the first six months, including 100,000 DTAC customers.

DTAC forecasts eight billion baht in non-voice revenue this year, up from six billion last year, with GPRS and Edge users doubling to four million.Mr Pakorn said Crie had contributed more than 20 million baht in revenue to DTAC since it began operations six months ago. Its most popular applications are Push Mail and Smart Chat with a combined 200,000 users.

He also said that operators expected explosive growth for 3G mobile data services next year, helped by greater availability of handsets and devices, much higher speeds, and greater variety of content and applications.

High-speed video streaming uploads and video messaging are expected to be among the most popular services.

DTAC shares closed yesterday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 40.50 baht, down 50 satang, in trade worth 95.1 million baht.
